Romanian puppeteer and mime artist. Ioan Brancu graduated in 1994 from the Academia de Teatru 葯i Film, Catedra de teatru de papu葯i (Academy of Theatre and Film, Department of Puppetry), attended courses organized by Ildik贸 Kov谩cs and Liviu Matei, and then worked as a puppeteer at the Timi葯oara Theatre where he played major roles. In 1990, he was taken on by 葰膬nd膬ric膬 Puppet Theatre (Teatrului 葰膬nd膬ric膬, today, Teatrul de anima牛ie 泞膬nd膬ric膬) in Bucharest, where he performed in Harap Alb (White Harap, 1992), Adunarea p膬s膬rilor (The Conference of the Birds, 1993), S芒nziana 葯i Pepelea (S芒nziana and Pepelea, 1995), Micul Prin葲 (The Little Prince, 1995), Bastien 葯i Bastienne (Bastien and Bastienne, 1998), B膬rbierul din Sevilia (The Barber of Seville, 1998), Ali Baba 葯i cei patruzeci de ho葲i (Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, 2001). He also directed several productions among which are Visul (The Dream, 1997), Croitora葯ul cel iste葲 (The Clever Little Tailor, 1999), P膬cal膬, Uria葯ul cel bun 葯i prietenos (The BFG), and D膬nil膬 Prepeleac. Ioan Brancu received the Best Actor Award in Constan葲a in 1992, and in 1998 in Boto葯ani he was awarded for his solo performance in Povestea unui ceas cu cuc (The Story of a Cuckoo Clock). He won The Best Original Performance Award for Faust in Prague in 2006 and received the UNITER (Uniunea Teatral膬 din Rom芒nia Theatre Union of Romania) Special Award for Puppetry in 2008. He teaches puppetry at Universitatea Na葲ional膬 de Art膬 Teatral膬 葯i Cinematografic膬 (UNATC, National University of Theatre Arts and Cinematography) in Bucharest where he has served as Chair of the Puppet Theatre Department since 2009.
